I used to think it was a waste of time to make my own taco seasoning when it is so easy to buy pre-mixed packets in the store. Obviously the store mixes, especially the conventional ones, have extra ingredients, fillers, and preservatives that you don’t need and probably don’t really want in your body. Once I tried it myself, I realized it is so easy and quick to make up your own organic taco seasoning mix. Plus it saves money in the long run which is a huge bonus.
If your spice rack/drawer/shelf is anything like mine it is a total hodge-podge of little plastic containers. Some which have only been used a handful of times. Several that I purchased more years ago than I would like to admit. Let’s just say there is a good chance I have spice jars older than my children. Buying “in bulk” doesn’t mean you are purchasing a large amount. You are taking only what you need from a larger supply instead of the pre-portioned jars that you have no control over. Read more
Making the switch to eating organic will make a difference to your wallet. Organic foods, in general, do cost a little more. Sometimes quite a lot more. Chances are if you are putting effort towards eating organic, you already have reason and belief that they are worth the extra investment and health benefits. You pay for what you get. Still, every penny counts no matter how limited, or not, your grocery budget is. There are a lot of things we can do to to eat better while saving money. I’ll be sharing tips that I have learned, some might seem obvious and others may be new to you. We all can use help stretching our organic budget as much as possible.
The budget tip for today is: Don’t be afraid of canned food! A lot of people have the misconception that canned foods are somehow less nutritious than fresh. That simply isn’t true, as long as you know what to look for. Canned foods don’t necessarily lose any nutritional value in the canning process but they can sometimes have added salt. And although it is increasingly rare, especially in organic, some cans are lined with a coating that contains BPA. The dangers of BPA have been widely publicized and it should be avoided. Luckily, I have yet to see an organic canned good that has a BPA lining. In fact a lot of brands do a good job of making their non-BPA status known on the label.
