I used to think it was a waste of time to make my own taco seasoning when it is so easy to buy pre-mixed packets in the store. Obviously the store mixes, especially the conventional ones, have extra ingredients, fillers, and preservatives that you don’t need and probably don’t really want in your body. Once I tried it myself, I realized it is so easy and quick to make up your own organic taco seasoning mix. Plus it saves money in the long run which is a huge bonus.
Even if you are just throwing a quick meal together at the end of a long taco Tuesday, there is no reason not to take a few extra minutes to know exactly what is going in the mouths of your family. I have been making this recipe for years. While I don’t have it quite memorized (mostly because I have a terrible memory!), I timed myself and it takes less than 60 seconds to combine. It is totally worth an extra minute or two of your time.
I think what really sold me on using my own organic taco seasoning mix is the great flavor I get from using fresher spices. I can’t say exactly what it is, but the chili powder sold in bulk at Whole Foods is SO good! I narrowed it down to that particular spice making a noticeable difference to my palate. Of course using spices that haven’t been over-processed, vacuum sealed, and sitting on a store shelf for who knows how long will make a big change either way.
This recipe uses common spices that you probably already have in your pantry. Whether you buy spices in bulk or not, you will love this easy recipe. Plus making it yourself means you can adjust the heat to how you like it. A little more chili powder or a little less. You can even add in a dash of cayenne powder if you really like it hot. The basic recipe is pretty mild but packed with flavor. (More on buying bulk spices here)
Of course as I shared in the Easy Cheesy Taco Pasta, there are now organic pre-mixed taco seasoning packets available. These do not usually have the nasty added chemicals and of course are super convenient but really mixing up your own is too simple not to try. Store bought taco seasoning packets don’t seem like a strain on the grocery budget, but if you think about what little bit is in there for what you pay, it can really add up. I use this recipe to replace 1 packets worth of seasoning but I am also including the recipe to make a larger quantity. Mixing up a bigger batch and storing in a glass jar is a great way to make it even more convenient. Just use about 2 tablespoons in place of 1 seasoning packet in any recipe.
