Chili is a one meal I never thought I would get my young kids to eat. No matter how little chili powder I use, they love to proclaim how ‘spicy’ a dish is (it’s not!). Once I finally convinced them to give it a chance, they realized they actually really like it! Since then we have been able to try all kind of varieties. Chances are if you are putting effort towards eating organic, you already have reason and belief that they are worth the extra investment and health benefits. You pay for what you get. The budget tip for today is: Don’t be afraid of canned food! A lot of people have the misconception that canned foods are somehow less nutritious than fresh. That simply isn’t true, as long as you know what to look for. Canned foods don’t necessarily lose any nutritional value in the canning process but they can sometimes have added salt. And although it is increasingly rare, especially in organic, some cans are lined with a coating that contains BPA. The dangers of BPA have been widely publicized and it should be avoided. Luckily, I have yet to see an organic canned good that has a BPA lining. In fact a lot of brands do a good job of making their non-BPA status known on the label.
